Wanted to make the most out of every single day of school holidays so we headed out on a bikepacking trip the first day of our 5 week break. We headed towards Melbourne town on the rail trail. Glorious ride!
Day One: 190ish km’s, awesome tail wind. Rail trail from Orbost to Bairnsdale, stopped in Bruthen for a refreshment and then in Bairnsdale for a pizza, kept pedalling to just out of Stratford, pitched the tent and slept well after 9 hrs in the saddle!
Day Two: Short ride into Stratford for a bakery breakkie and coffee, then back on to a rail trail – the Gippsland Plains RT to Maffra only 7.5km away and stopped for a second breakky! Just cause we could! More coffee and bakery treats! Good rail trail stuff and great weather! Made it to Traralgon and had a delicious cafe lunch and then on to Yarragon via the train! From Yarragon we rode to Warrigul and then decided to jump on to the train and headed back to Marlo as we had to get back home. About 10hr riding and another 190ishkm’s. Got off the train at Bairnsdale at about 10pm, grabbed a Chocolate Milk and set up the tent in the rain, where it proceeded to rain all night!
Day Three: Slept in until 8am, hoping the rain would ease off but had to pack up in the pouring rain, headed to Maccas for a true bikepackers breakky then back on the soggy, slow, wet, sludgy rail trail to Marlo. Stopped at the Bruthen Brewery for lunch and contemplated getting a lift home with a friend we ran into there but decided not to. It took us 8.5 hours ride time to do that 116km, which had taken us 6hrs only 2 days earlier!! Awesome ride, did alot of eating and latte sipping and tested out some gear for the Great Southern Brevet which we are heading to this weekend! Met some great people along the way; a German dude riding around Oz and numerous families riding the rail trail which was great to see!
